Escape Prison: How to Solve the 3×3 Cube Puzzle in 12 Moves (Part 2)

Among all the challenges inEscape Prison, the minigame on the retro green-phosphor computer terminal (featuring an MS-DOS prompt and the notice“Directory of C:\Temp – Can be solved in 12 moves”) is widely regarded as one of the game’s toughest roadblocks. In thissecond part of our walkthrough, we reveal the mathematical 3D cube rotation mechanics and provide the exact, step-by-step 12-move sequence to beat it every single time!

Escape Prison Security Terminal and Riddle Systems

The high-security computer terminal requires pure logic and spatial awareness.

How the 3D Cube Puzzle Actually Works

Most players mistake this puzzle for a standard 2D sliding tile game. In reality, the pieces are3D rotating cubes:

  • The 3×3 Grid:There are 8 numbered cubes arranged around a single empty central slot (slot 5).
  • 90-Degree Rotations:When you slide a cube into the adjacent empty slot, the cuberotates 90 degreesalong the direction of travel. Each cube has red, white, and black faces.
  • The Clear Condition:All 8 perimeter cubes must show theirSOLID RED face pointing outward towards the player, with slot 5 left completely empty, forming a uniform red rectangular frame.
  • The 2-Step Flip Rule:To flip a cube’s face 180 degrees (bringing the red face from the back to the front), that cube must be movedtwice in the same axis.

The Complete 12-Move Solution Table

Starting from the default initial scramble on Level 03 (when slot 5 is empty and the counter shows 12 moves allowed), execute these exact steps in order:

✨ Terminal Override Unlocked!

Immediately after the 12th move, the center slot returns to 5, all outer 8 cubes turn brilliant red, and the MS-DOS screen prints the bypass authentication command, unlocking access to the prison power grid!
