Welcome toPart 4—the finale of our 4-part Lore Devlog SeriesforAs Duty Demands. AcrossPart 1,Part 2, andPart 3, we traced the history of theDel Bono Naval Retirement Homethrough reporter Arthur P. Gillman’s 1992Coastal Sentinelarticles, the aborted NCIS raid, and Admiral Del Bono’s psychiatric treatises.
Now we turn to the voices of the patients themselves. In the climax of the reception sequence, right after Coral watches the Admiral’s VHS broadcast under red emergency lighting, the facility’s backup generator dies. As darkness swallows the hallways and ghostly sailors begin swaying as if standing on the rolling deck of a ship,12 haunting inscriptionsmanifest across the walls.

- Part 3:“Absolute Authority” & “Beyond Consent” — Inside the Admiral’s Forbidden Doctrine
- Part 4 (You Are Here):“Below Crush Depth” — Decoding the 12 Wall Inscriptions of the Haunted Crew
1. Theme I: The Nursing Home as a Submarine Below Crush Depth
The first group of wall writings reveals the shared delusion—or shared reality—imposed on the residents by Admiral Del Bono’s conditioning. To the veterans trapped inside, the retirement home is a damaged submarine resting on the ocean floor far below crush depth:
Inscription #01 (Below Crush Depth):
“… you don’t realize we’re already below crush depth. The Admiral says we can’t open the windows. Not yet. If we do, the ocean will come in to take what’s left of us.”
Inscription #02 (June 12th Letter to Sarah):
“June 12th. Dear Sarah, the nurses say it’s raining outside, but I know the truth. It’s not rain. It’s the hull leaking again. I can hear the rivets popping in the hallway. I stayed at my post, just like the Admiral ordered, but the water is so cold now. No one came to save us.”
Inscription #03 (Log Entry: 0300 Hours):
“LOG ENTRY: 0300 HOURS. Visual contact confirmed. There is a man standing at the end of the corridor. He wears no suit, yet he does not drown. I tried to signal the surface, but the phone lines are filled with seawater. If you find this, tell the Admiral the hull is singing. It’s a beautiful sound. It enfolds me, it consoles me… I want to stay here.”
Inscription #04 (Three Sonar Pings):
“One ping for the living. Two pings for the dead. Three pings for the things the Admiral keeps under his bed. The floor is shifting, the ballast is blown, and the deep is calling for what it is owed. Don’t hold your breath when the lights go out—the salt is already inside your lungs.”
Notice howInscription #01explains the physical architecture of the facility: the Admiral forbids opening the windows because the patients have been conditioned to believe the ocean pressure outside will crush them instantly. Meanwhile,Inscription #03captures the moment a patient’s resistance breaks entirely—hearing the“singing hull”and surrendering to the deep.
2. Theme II: Literary Echoes — Coleridge, The Seafarer & Wilfred Owen
Three of the wall inscriptions inAs Duty Demandsweave classical maritime poetry and war literature directly into the horror of the Del Bono estate:
Inscription #05 (After Coleridge’sThe Rime of the Ancient Mariner):
“Water, water, everywhere, and all the boards did shrink; water, water, everywhere, but the Admiral will not let us blink.”
Inscription #06 (After the Old English elegyThe Seafarer):
“Frost bound my feet in frozen chains, and hunger tore my sea-weary soul. I am still drifting in the paths of exile.”
Inscription #07 (After Wilfred Owen’sDulce et Decorum Est):
“If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs… you would not tell the old Lie to children ardent for some desperate glory: that the sea has a shore where the suffering ends.”
3. Theme III: The Real Weight of Veteran PTSD
At its heart,As Duty Demandsis a tribute to the psychological battles fought by veterans long after a conflict officially ends. On the game’s opening screen, before the horror even begins, we display verified real-world data regarding post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) among service members. The remaining five wall writings give voice to that invisible struggle:
Inscription #08 (Corrosion):
“Stopping feels like corrosion. I’m home, but my lungs are still full of deep water.”
Inscription #09 (Urban Camouflage):
“Every door slams like a depth charge. They say the sky is clear, but I only see bombers stacked behind the clouds. I’m not home. I’m a ghost in urban camouflage, waiting for the whistle. The attack is imminent.”
Inscription #10 (Counting Exits in the Park):
“I sat in the park and tried to be normal. A kite crossed my vision and my body reacted before my brain. They talked about groceries and headlines. I counted exits. The tea burned my hands. I was still freezing on the ship.”
Inscription #11 (A Fork on a Plate):
“They told me the war ended years ago, but they forgot to tell my hands. I’m at the table and the sound of a fork on a plate is a hull scraping against rocks. My wife touches my shoulder to wake me, and my body moves before I know who it is. I’m tired of pretending. The world is too bright, too loud, and everyone walks as if the ground were solid. I don’t remember what that feels like.”
Inscription #12 (The Sway of the Floorboards):
“They sang of homecoming. I passed under arches meant to welcome, and found silence instead. The sea followed me in the shape of shadows, in the sway of the floorboards. The walls are unkind. They do not bend. I remember the men who did not return. I remember their hands in mine, the way the world shifted beneath us. The living say I am safe. I count the seconds between their words.”
4. “Welcome Aboard!” — Where the Lore Leads Coral
Once the final wall inscription appears and the shadow of the Admiral lunges out of the darkness, Terry’s voice cuts through the void with chilling calm:“The Admiral said you can start your shift tonight… Welcome aboard!”
When Coral next opens his eyes, he is no longer standing in the reception room—he is pinned to a bed insleep paralysisas lightning flashes outside the window and an abyssal tentacled figure looms in the room.
